  • Apples – you’ll need four medium apples; choose your favorite variety
  • Cinnamon – ground cinnamon gives this baked apple recipe it’s warm cozy flavors
  • Old-fashioned oats – we recommend using old-fashioned rolled oats instead of quick oats so you get a nice thick texture. Use certified gluten-free oats, if needed
  • Gluten-free flour blend – a scant half a cup of gluten-free flour helps create the perfect texture and melt in the crumb topping. We like Bob’s Red Mill One-to-One Gluten-Free Baking Flour or King Arthur Measure-for-Measure Gluten-Free Flour. You can also use regular all-purpose flour if you don’t need this baked apple dessert to be gluten-free
  • Pecans – use raw pecans, such as these from Thrive Market
  • Maple syrup – select high-quality pure maple syrup (not maple-flavored corn syrup)
  • Butter – use an unsalted butter; alternatively, you can use vegan butter or coconut oil to make this recipe dairy-free and vegan baked apples
  • Vanilla extract
  • Nutmeg – this spice provides a beautiful fall-harvest flavor when mixed with the cinnamon

  1. Cut the apples in half. Place the apples, cut-side up, in a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Dust the apples with cinnamon; set aside. 
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, pecans, maple syrup, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; stir well. 
  3. Divide the oat topping evenly over the apples. 
  4. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 20-25 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

A delicious, real-food dessert that’s so simple to make. Easy, perfect, and so-good for gatherings of all kinds, and the leftovers can even be served for breakfast with a dollop of yogurt.

Ingredients

For the Apples:

  • 4 medium apples (about 220 g each)
  • Cinnamon for dusting 

For the Crumb Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (100 g)
  • ½ cup gluten-free flour blend or all-purpose flour (80 g)*
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans (27 g)
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted**
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg 
  • Pinch of sea salt

Optional for Serving: Vanilla ice cream or non-dairy frozen dessert, plain or vanilla yogurt, or whipped topping; plus toasted, chopped pecans and a drizzle of maple syrup

Instructions
